Sometimes, an ETF on InvestEngine may become sell only. This means you can continue to hold it or sell it, but you can’t buy any more units through InvestEngine.
This can happen after we review the ETFs available on our platform. It’s about the ETF itself, not you or your account.
What sell only means for you
If an ETF you hold becomes sell only:
- You can continue to hold the units you already have.
- You can sell the ETF if you choose to.
- You can’t buy any more units of that ETF through InvestEngine.
- The units you already hold will still rise and fall with the market, as normal.
- Nothing happens to your holding automatically.
Why an ETF may become sell only
We regularly review the ETFs available on InvestEngine to make sure they’re still right for our customers and our platform.
Following one of these reviews, we may decide that an ETF should no longer be available to buy. This could be for different reasons, including changes to the ETF, the provider, regulation, or other external factors.
In some cases, the ETF may become available to buy again in future. In other cases, it may stay sell only.
Could my ETF be removed from InvestEngine completely?
Possibly, but this is not always what happens.
Sometimes, an ETF is made sell only while we review or resolve an issue. If we ever need to remove an ETF from InvestEngine completely, we’ll contact you first and explain what’s happening, when, and what your options are.
Until then, you can continue to hold or sell the units you already have.
What this means for AutoInvest
If a sell-only ETF is part of your AutoInvest and has a target weight above 0%, AutoInvest won’t run for that portfolio while the ETF is sell only.
To avoid this, go to Edit portfolio and set the sell-only ETF’s target weight to 0%. You can also review the rest of your portfolio and make any other changes you need before your next payment.
If you hold more than one sell-only ETF in the same portfolio, you’ll need to set each sell-only ETF’s target weight to 0%.
What you can do
There’s no action you have to take just because an ETF is sell only. It may help to:
- Check your portfolio
- If the ETF is part of your AutoInvest, make sure its target weight is set to 0%.
- Decide whether to keep or sell
- You can continue to hold the ETF, or sell it if you choose to. This depends on your own goals and circumstances.
- Choose another ETF, if needed
- If you want future payments to be invested elsewhere, you can add another ETF or adjust the rest of your portfolio.
Does InvestEngine recommend that I sell?
No. Making an ETF sell only is not a recommendation to buy, hold or sell.
