Whether you’re just getting started or topping up an existing investment, adding money to your portfolio with InvestEngine is simple- and how you do it depends slightly on the type of portfolio you’re using.
This guide walks you through the steps for DIY, Managed, and LifePlans portfolios, as well as how to move money from your cash portfolio into your investments.

Adding funds to a Managed or LifePlans portfolio
To invest directly into a Managed or LifePlans portfolio:
- Log in and navigate to the portfolio you want to top up
- Select Add funds
- Enter the amount you'd like to invest
- Choose your preferred funding method:
- Instant Transfer via Open Banking
- Manual Bank Transfer
- Follow the prompts to complete your payment
If the funds arrive before 2pm on a business day, they’ll usually be invested the same day. If the funds arrive after 2pm, the investment will take place on the next business day.
Investing in a DIY portfolio
With DIY portfolios, you control when to invest the available cash.
To invest:
- Go to your DIY portfolio and click iInvest
- You’ll see your available cash balance
- Click show cash breakdown for more details, including pending orders and incoming funds
- Enter the amount you want to invest (you can also add more funds if needed)
- Confirm the investment
Your money will be invested according to your target ETF weightings.
A small amount of cash may be left uninvested due to fractional rounding. We’ll explain more here.
If you have AutoInvest enabled:
- Cash added before 12 noon on a business day will be invested automatically that day
- Cash added after 12 noon will be invested on the next business day
Read more about AutoInvest here. See How AutoInvest works.
Moving money from your cash portfolio into investments
If you’ve added money to your cash portfolio, you can move it into another portfolio when you’re ready to invest.
To do this:
- Select your cash portfolio
- Click move cash out
- Choose the investment portfolio you want to transfer the money to
- Enter the amount to transfer and click confirm
Remember, your cash portfolio does not earn interest- so it’s best to transfer into your investments when you’re ready.
If you transfer money into a DIY portfolio, the cash will appear there- but it won’t be invested automatically. You’ll still need to go to your DIY portfolio and click Invest to place your order based on your ETF weightings.
